The U.S. Postal Service launched a new iPhone app that lets users scan barcodes on shipping labels to track packages and other mail with their iPhones or iPads.

The app stores the label numbers so users can then follow the packages progress.

"Whenever and wherever they are, customers can check the delivery status of their shipments by simply scanning the barcodes on their shipping label receipts," said USPS Channel Access Vice President Kelly Sigmon. "Millions of Americans are making mobile devices a part of their daily lives, and we're providing solutions that meet their needs."

The free app is now available at the iTunes store.
