A Supercomputer Sandbox for Testing Federal AI

Today on the Daily Scoop podcast from the Scoop News Group, MITRE, a nonprofit that operates federally funded research and development centers, announced on Tuesday that it is developing a sandbox environment tailored for federal agencies to test AI applications. Slated to be available by year’s end, this initiative was revealed during an event in Washington D.C. The sandbox is expected to support a variety of use cases, including national security, healthcare, transportation, and climate. Powering the sandbox will be data center infrastructure from Nvidia, which MITRE referred to as a supercomputer capable of training AI applications such as large language models and other generative AI tools for government use. Additionally, the system will train multimodal perception systems that can process and understand information from diverse data types simultaneously, including images, environmental and medical sensors, text, and radar.

MITRE stated that federal entities could access the sandbox through existing contracts with the R&D centers it manages for various agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration, and others. Charles Clancy, the senior vice president and chief technology officer at MITRE, highlighted the relevance of President Joe Biden’s executive order from October 8, which sets forth responsibilities and deadlines for agencies to implement and leverage this technology.
