GSA’s Login.gov platform gets a new director

The General Services Administration (GSA) has announced Hanna Kim as the new director of Login.gov, effective May 11. This program serves as the secure sign-on gateway for both the U.S. public and government employees to access services from various federal agencies. Prior to this role, Kim was the deputy director of Login.gov and has a background in developing AI-based technologies at Amazon, where she focused on scaling policy enforcement. Her federal experience includes positions with the Departments of State, Treasury, and Defense.

Dan Lopez-Braus, the outgoing director, will transition to a senior adviser role within the Technology Transformation Services (TTS). Under Kim’s leadership, Login.gov will implement a new pricing structure and pilot a selfie-based identity verification system. Ann Lewis, the director of GSA’s TTS, believes these initiatives will expand Login.gov’s utility for more agencies and programs nationwide.

Additionally, a recent Government Accountability Office report highlighted Login.gov as a key federal use case for biometric identification, with specific utilization by the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Social Security Administration for identity verification. However, the program has faced challenges, including a critique last year from the GSA’s Inspector General, who reported that the agency overcharged federal agencies by more than $10 million for a higher security compliance level than Login.gov actually provided.
