An interview with the General Services Administration’s first chief AI officer

In response to the Biden administration’s executive order on AI and subsequent OMB guidance, federal CFO Act agencies have begun appointing chief AI officers to oversee AI usage, innovation, and risk management. The General Services Administration (GSA) was among the first to comply, naming its Chief Data Officer, Zach Whitman, as its Chief AI Officer as well.

During a conversation with FedScoop’s Madison Alder and Rebecca Heilweil, Whitman shared insights into his new dual role. He discussed the challenges of managing both positions, his objectives as GSA’s inaugural chief AI officer, and his broader vision for AI implementation within the agency.
