Leveraging the cloud for disaster recovery and high IT availability

Public sector IT leaders face increasing demands and regulatory requirements. Although cloud services have significantly assisted agencies in meeting these challenges, they also necessitate rethinking fundamentals like disaster recovery and IT availability.

In a new video interview, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) CIO Allen Hill and Andrew Davidson, senior vice president for products at MongoDB, discuss how strategies are shifting for agencies. For instance, Hill shares that moving IT operations to the cloud has necessitated updated disaster recovery and business continuity plans, especially in the event of cyberattacks.

To enhance resilience and ensure high levels of data availability and integrity, Hill also discusses the FCC’s new digital mission roadmap, which is focused on modernization, optimization, full-stack observability and zero trust. “These priorities involve adopting a cloud-first mentality, leveraging real-time analytics, automating operational workflows and enhancing security through zero trust principles,” he says.

Davidson echoes several of Hill’s points, noting that modern data management platforms help public sector agencies achieve greater assurance and support. He also explains how MongoDB’s distributed systems, integrated search capabilities and real-time data processing provide robust disaster recovery and scalability options. “It allows you to really be able to scale in a limitless manner without running into exponentially growing cost concerns,” says Davidson.

Looking ahead, both Hill and Davidson emphasize the importance of planning for future AI workloads. Hill outlines the FCC’s strategy to finish its data center migration by the end of 2025, incorporating microservices, serverless environments and codeless technologies to improve flexibility and resilience. Meanwhile, Davidson says empowering smaller teams to build and manage services, along with modernizing off legacy systems, will be crucial for handling the explosion of data and performance demands.
