DHS launches an AI Safety and Security Board

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently announced the formation of its Artificial Intelligence Safety and Security Board. This initiative aligns with the department’s intensified focus on AI and rising concerns about the technology’s impact on critical services. The board features a notable lineup, including tech leaders like OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, AMD’s Lisa Su, and NVIDIA’s Jensen Huang, along with government figures such as Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell and Arati Prabhakar, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

During a press call, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas highlighted the dual opportunities and challenges AI presents, particularly regarding critical infrastructure. The board, meeting for the first time in May, is tasked with developing recommendations for integrating AI into critical infrastructure and addressing potential risks.

Secretary Mayorkas also addressed criticisms of Sam Altman’s inclusion on the board, expressing confidence in his appointment. Additionally, the department is enhancing its AI capabilities internally, having received around 4,000 applications for its AI Core—a group of 50 technology experts it plans to recruit this year, led by former OMB official Michael Boyce.

DHS is also progressing with its AI roadmap and the development of several generative AI pilots.
