How Labor Department harnesses AI to improve services

Federal agencies have been perhaps among the biggest pioneers in harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to deal with the large scale of public services.

In this executive video panel, Sanjay Koyani, chief technology officer at the U.S. Department of Labor and Steve Heibein, AI Evangelist at Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s Federal division, discuss the practical lessons DOL and government agencies are learning in piloting AI/ML projects.

“Our journey now is to understand what the agency’s business needs are, then determine what solutions are best for those in emerging tech; artificial intelligence and so forth, are things that we see as really having an application. An area that we’re starting to look at right now, especially as we move to a cloud-driven environment, is the cognitive services that agencies are looking for that AI and the cloud can help to advance,” says Koyani. He highlights the department’s pilots around speech-to-text, text-to-speech, translation services, form recognition services and even identity fraud.

The Labor Department has implemented important foundational elements, like other government agencies, but they still face challenges. Heibein offers his thoughts on what the industry is seeing more broadly and the government’s progress in applying AI and ML. He says that many agencies struggle with the next step in moving from proof of concept to production.

They also touch on considerations for choosing the most appropriate projects for AI; selecting the right data to train AI/ML; and the importance of high performance and cloud computing for rapid iteration.
