Commerce launches redesigned data portal

The Commerce Department has made it easier for the public to find and pull data from the agency's 12 bureaus.

The Commerce Department has taken another step to ensure its standing as “America’s Data Agency.”

Commerce released a newly designed data catalog, improving the public’s ability to comb through each of the agency’s 12 bureaus for publicly released data.

The Commerce Data Hub — which can be found at data.commerce.gov — now has automatic application programming interface, or API, accessibility and stronger in-browser visualization tools for people looking to use the agency’s data sets. The website is also responsive, giving users access to data across a range of devices.

The department admitted Monday that the catalog is a work in progress and said it would improve how data is organized within the site, as well as how department data matches with what is listed on Data.gov, the federal government’s data portal.

Commerce will also work on refining its mobile experience, improving metadata and API accessibility, and adding new data sets to its inventory.

“All of these improvements will focus on the existing and growing community of data customers,” an agency blog post read. “After all, the Department of Commerce’s data is only valuable if it can be found and used.”

The data portal comes as the agency recently launched a fully redesigned website, created with a partnership between Commerce and the Government Publishing Office.

Commerce came to GPO after the office had designed other federal sites, including the Library of Congress’ Open World site, Commerce’s Stop Fakes site and the United States China Commission site.
