The long-awaited White House cybersecurity executive order is expected to be released in late February, shortly after President Obama’s State of the Union address, Sen. Tom Carper told The Hill.
“I think the smart thing for us to do would be to receive it, to read it, and I raised this as a possibility with [Commerce Committee] Chairman Sen. Jay Rockefeller [D-W.Va.] today: Maybe the relevant committees do a joint hearing … and invite the administration to come in, explain the executive order, and invite other folks to come in and react to the executive order,” Carper told The Hill.
The executive order, which has been rumored since the last few months of 2012, is expected to mirror many of the provisions set forth in legislation proposed by Sen. Joseph Lieberman during last year’s Congress.
The legislation, recently introduced to this year’s Congress, calls for private sector entities that protect critical infrastructure to voluntarily share threats information with the federal government.
Lieberman’s bill was twice voted down in the Senate last year, although this year’s bill is expected to fair a better chance.
