DOT seeks CTO

The Department of Transportation is seeking a chief technology officer for the Office of the Secretary of Transportation. The job pays between $119,554 and $165,300 per year and is open for applications until Feb. 6.

The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) advances the agency’s mission by identifying technologies that transform, improve, or support the DOT business missions.  The CTO shall assist the Chief Information Officer (CIO) in leading the Department in a visionary, collaborative, and stakeholder-focused manner to leverage technology resources that improve business processes, accomplish strategic DOT missions, goals, and program objectives and reduce costs.  The CTO will manage the following program areas.

Business Technology & Governance:

The CTO promotes the effective and efficient design and operation of major technology-based initiatives and management processes. The CTO also collaborates with the Chief Financial Officer and Senior Procurement executive to assure that technology based systems effectively provide financial and performance data, link program performance, and comply with applicable acquisition regulations and administrative processes for IT investments.

Technology Strategy & Modernization:

The CTO provides executive leadership in order to introduce new technologies and methods supporting complex application/systems development throughout DOT and the national transportation infrastructure.  The CTO oversees technology strategy and modernization for DOT and advises the DOT CIO and the senior leadership within and outside the department.

The CTO advocates:

  • transportation mission assurance,
  • innovative uses of technology, and
  • the implementation of sound capital and investment planning.

The CTO vacancy is classified as a Senior Level (SL) position.  SL positions may include limited supervisory and related managerial duties.  SL members are independent advisors or technical experts and do not involve fundamental research and development responsibilities.
