The U.S. Navy is cutting back on printing costs.
According to the Department of Navy Chief Information Officer’s office, all Navy Marine Corps Intranet unclassified print default settings are being changed to print documents in black ink and on both sides of the paper.
The DON CIO memo “Mandatory Guidance Regarding Management of Department of the Navy Copiers, Printers, Fax Machines and Multi-functional Devices” of January 23 mandates the change, which took effect March 15.
The Navy quoted a U.S. General Services Administration report that said printing in color costs up to 10 times as much as printing in black ink only, and making this change government-wide could result in a savings of up to $171 million a year.
The approximate 4,000 users impacted by this change will still be able to print color, high-quality or single-sided documents by changing the settings for individual print jobs.
