State Department CISO retiring
The official responsible for IT security at the State Department is retiring, he told FedScoop Friday.
William Lay is State’s deputy CIO for information assurance and chief information security officer, a post he’s held since September 2012. His last day at work will be May 27.
Lay said in an email he was retiring to San Antonio, Texas, and had no immediate plans. “I will figure out the next chapter of my life when I get back to Texas,” he said.
A replacement has not yet been named.
Prior to joining the State Department, Lay served as the CIO/G6 for the Army’s Installation Management Command.
Lay has worked in federal IT for more than three decades. Prior to his Army job, he worked for the departments of Energy and Commerce, the Federal Communications Commission and the Minerals Management Service in the Interior Department.
He also held an adjunct position at the University of Alaska at Anchorage, where he taught micro and macroeconomics.
Lay holds a bachelor’s in economics from North Carolina State University; a bachelor’s in computer science from the University of Alaska at Anchorage; and a master’s in Management from Alaska Pacific University.
