Intel, Samsung to develop IoT policy recommendations
Intel and Samsung announced an initiative Tuesday to lead a working group that would develop recommendations for policymakers on the Internet of Things.
The initiative, called the National IoT Strategy Dialogue, is meant to coincide with work the Department of Commerce’s work on IoT and with the Developing Innovation and Growing the Internet of Things Act. The Information Technology Industry Council, who will manage the new initiative, plans to convene a working group of member companies and other stakeholders.
“We look forward to working with Intel, ITI and other stakeholders in Washington to find the collaborative path forward in bringing the transformative benefits and solutions of IoT to scale” said Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman and CEO Oh-Hyun Kwon.
The DIGIT Act also calls for a working group of stakeholders. If enacted, one year from the bill’s passing the Federal Communications Commission would also be required to submit recommendations regarding the spectrum needs of IoT. The bill was introduced in March and has been approved by the Senate Commerce Committee.
Earlier Tuesday, Kwon also announced that Samsung Electronics will spend $1.2 billion on IoT research and development.
The Information Technology and Innovation Foundation’s Center for Data Innovation said in a report late last year that policymakers will need to develop a national strategy to maximize the potential of IoT.
The benefits of IoT will not be fully realized with exclusively private industry development, the report said.
