FBI: virus could impact Internet access starting July 9

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is warning consumers any computer infected with the DNSChanger virus could lose Internet access beginning July 9. The agency estimates approximately 64,000 computers in the United States are still affected.

An alleged organized criminal enterprise called Rove Digital deployed the virus, which controlled computer users’ web browsing. The criminals profited from their actions by replacing legitimate advertising with their own advertising. Six of the members were arrested last year.

To make sure victims didn’t lose Internet service, the FBI worked with a non-profit organization to provide victims with a temporary solution, which expires on July 9.
