The U.S. Energy Information Administration launched a new state energy portal in beta as part of the 2012 Winter Fuels Outlook Conference in Washington, D.C.

The portal upgrades and builds on EIA’s popular state energy profiles. EIA has added instant state comparisons, interactive state rankings, and an advanced state data finder to the key statistics and analysis.

The site includes new interactive maps that allow a user to quickly switch between 10 predefined views, such as “Electricity” or “Fossil Fuel Resources,” and to choose from any of five base maps, such as “Topographical” or “Satellite.”

By selecting a predefined view or turning on and off the 38 map layers directly, users can pan and zoom to explore energy resources and infrastructure at the national level, the state level, or an area within a state. A feedback button allows users to share their comments and see what others are saying.
