The Defense Information Systems Agency has made another step in data center consolidation as it closed its Dayton, Ohio, and Chambersburg, Pa., data centers. The functions of these centers will be transferred to other Defense Enterprise Computing Centers.
The centers were closed in a federalwide effort to cut costs and reduce duplication and under the Joint Information Environment initiative by the Defense Department.
According to a DISA statement, the effort will “provide a consolidated, collaborative and secure JIE that enables end-to-end information sharing and independent enterprise services across the department.”
About 30 civilian employees were affected by the closures, and they were either reassigned to other DOD positions or eligible to retire from federal employment.
The military and DISA hope to establish a core-computing infrastructure that provides safe and quality access to enterprise services and combines infrastructure requirements and computing services create widespread economic efficiencies.
DISA’s Defense Enterprise Computing Centers establish a common platform to further collaborate DOD efforts, and “enhance operational effectiveness,” according to the release.
