Securing the World Cup

Innovation of the Year

DHS’s Securing the World Cup effort brought together technology, threat intelligence and interagency coordination to support security across the 2026 FIFA World Cup’s 11 U.S. host cities. The department’s work included counter-drone capabilities, infrastructure protection, cybersecurity exercises and emergency response training, connecting federal expertise with state, local and private-sector partners. Preparations included simulated cyberattacks to test coordination and specialized training for responders protecting venues and surrounding communities. DHS’s Science and Technology Directorate also advanced tools to detect and counter unmanned aircraft threats. The program demonstrates how coordinated planning and technical capabilities can strengthen readiness for a major international event while building expertise that supports future large-scale security operations.
