DOT CIO: Pushing the IPv6 Mandate

The Department of Transportation has taken an aggressive approach to implementing IPv6, transitioning to the new protocol for internet addresses in advance of the Office of Management and Budget’s end of Fiscal Year 2012 deadline.

“Through a cloud computing contract, DOT is the first public department to transition to ‘dual stack’ delivery,” DOT Chief Information Officer Nitin Pradham wrote on CIO.gov. “’Dual stack’ is a technology that allows programmers to work with a hybrid IPv4/IPv6 network, and is a key component of the transition process.”

Through the contract, DOT began delivering traffic through IPv6 and transitioned www.dot.gov to dual stack delivery on November 18 of this year.
