NASA’s open government team announced the agency has contributed its first public repository to the open source code sharing site Github. The project, the 3D interactive world viewer World Wind Java, was first released in 2004.
NASA joined GitHub in June 2011 and has since then re-purposed or “forked” code from four other contributions to the site.
“We are actively reaching out to other open source software projects within NASA and encouraging them to make use of this and similar resources. We hope that highly visible and coordinated hosting of projects will stimulate development and awareness,” writes NASA’s William Eshagh on the open.NASA blog.
