HHS opens innovation program to public voting

For the first time, the public can vote on the finalists for Department of Health and Human Services’ HHSInnovates awards that recognizes innovative work done by agency employees.

The new “People’s Choice” award received 60 submissions that were whittled down to a top six. Public voting is open from September 6-14, and the awards ceremony will be held September 24.

The HHSinnovates program launched in the spring of 2010 as part of the department’s open government efforts to celebrate innovation by employees of HHS. Since then, employees have submitted nominations for nearly 400 new staff-driven innovations.

Twice a year, HHS employees are invited to submit innovations via an internal intranet site. Top innovations are posted for secure, online voting and commenting by the entire HHS community. Winning innovations are recognized by the HHS secretary in an awards ceremony and the innovators are personally invited to share their innovations with the department’s leadership.
