Report: Pentagon to develop new Air Force One

The Department of Defense plans to develop a new Air Force One aircraft that will be deployed after 2020, according to a report in Bloomberg.

Frank Kendall, the undersecretary of defense for acquisition, authorized the Air Force to establish an office for the replacement program with $757 million budget through 2017 for the first phase of the program, along with $1.84 billion for a Marine One replacement through 2017.

The Air Force plans to release request for proposals in 2015 with the potential for a development contract award for the new Air Force One in 2016.

A new presidential helicopter wouldn’t be declared operational until 2020.
