The Department of Defense has appointed Charles Beames to the senior executive service and assigned him to be the new principal director for space and intelligence in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense (Acquisition, Technology and Logistics), the Department of Defense announced.
Beames previously served as strategic advisor in the same office before his promotion.
Bio:
Charles Beames, a member of the Senior Executive Service, is the Strategic Advisor for Space and Intelligence to the Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics where he is responsible for acquisition oversight of all space-based and national intelligence programs executed by the Department of Defense.
His experience in space and intelligence systems includes airborne, ground-based, and space-based systems development, deployment and employment. He has served as a design engineer and program manager, and deployed to various locations worldwide in support of on-going operations. Before his current assignment, he was Director, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Systems in the Space and Intelligence Office in OUSD/AT&L. Prior to OSD, he served as Chief, Operational Capabilities Division, United States Strategic Command Center for Combating Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD). There, his division was responsible for identifying and advocating for combating WMD operational capabilities, translating strategic guidance into material and non-materiel solutions.
Before his research fellowship at the National War College, he was the space and intelligence liaison to the U.S. Congress for Air Force Appropriations. He has held staff assignments at HQ, Air Force Materiel Command, the United States House of Representatives, and the Office of Secretary of the Air Force. A 1988 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy with a B.S. in both engineering mechanics and materials science, he also received an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. In 2007, he received an M.S. in National Security Strategy from the National War College in Washington, D.C.
