NASA announced the launch of its second International Space Apps Challenge featuring 50 space exploration related challenges that range from building applications to designing visualizations based on NASA data.

The two-day event is scheduled for April 20-21, 2013, in 75 locations around the world.

According to NASA, the event aims to embrace “collaborative problem solving with a goal of producing relevant open-source solutions to address global needs applicable to both life on Earth and life in space.”

Astronaut Ron Garan participated in a reddit AMA on Monday to discuss the event.

“I’m excited about those projects that incorporate open hardware, software and data. The more open the platforms are, the more we can bring people along on space mission not just as spectators but as fellow crew-mates,” said Garan.

Follow the challenge on Facebook or Twitter at @spaceapps and the hashtag #spaceapps.

The first Space Apps Challenge was held in April 2012 in 25 cities on all seven continents.
