The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. announced Thursday it had appointed Lawrence Gross Jr. as chief information officer, closing a vacancy that has been shrouded in controversy over the past few months.

Gross takes over after the previous CIO, Barry West, was put on administrative leave in June for reasons that remain unclear.

At the time, an FDIC spokesperson told FedScoop that West was out for personal reasons, and he still remained a FDIC employee. However, West resigned in August, moving into a role with IT consulting firm Mason Harriman Group.

Previously, Gross served as the CIO of the Agriculture Department’s Farm Service Agency. He has also spent time in various roles at the departments of Energy, Justice and the Interior.
